Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include wrist joint pain, numbness of the fingers, weakness in the hands and inability to use strength to hold things.

The cause of this disease is mostly due to frequent wrist-twisting during work, which leads to overwork. For example, typing on the computer keyboard for a long time, operating the mouse, and other actions, so the Carpal Tunnel Syndrom is also called “mouse hand." These actions may cause half-displacement of wrist ossicles or donation of wrist ligaments, resulting in narrowing of the wrist ducts, pressing on the intermediate nerve lines and causing paralysis and muscle contraction of the mother, index and middle fingers. The ligaments, muscles, and joints of the wrist are inflamed, causing swelling and pain in the wrist. The patient is usually awakened by a numbness of the fingers at night or early in the morning. The pain in the wrist seems to be a burning sensation, and would often not be able to hold things firmly.

Diagnose

Because the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are very similar to the symptoms of cervical nerve compression, it is necessary to find the root cause to prescribe the right medicine. The chiropractor will first check the distribution of the recurrent nerves in the wrist and the cervical spine, and then test the mobility of the hand and wrist muscles and joints to determine whether the finger palsy comes from the cervical spine or the wrist. Sometimes patients will have problems in both parts at the same time, resulting in double effects that causes numbness in the cervical spine, back, hands, and fingers.

Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Chiropractors will use ultrasound and electrotherapy to relieve swelling and pain in the wrist. Then make the correction method to correct the ossicles of the wrist, and finally add the movement of the wrist to manage the patient's symptoms.

Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

– Avoid long term “wrist twisting” actions

– If you want to use the keyboard frequently, a keyboard cushion should be placed under the keyboard to support the wrist, best leave fifteen to twenty minutes to rest.

-Do some wrist exercises to increase wrist muscle tension and strengthen ligament tension.

As shown below:

– If the patient’s condition is very serious, a wrist strap can be worn to consolidate the position of the wrist during work.
