Fibromyalgia

Excel Medical Group

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease with symptoms including muscle pain and fatigue. The cause of this disease is unknown, and more than 90% of fibromyalgia patients are women. There is no large-scale research to clarify whether women suffering from fibromyalgia are related to female reproductive hormones.

Fibromyalgia is easily misdiagnosed as myofasciitis

Fibromyalgia is a stress-related disease and can be regarded as chronic fatigue syndrome. The patient’s immune system triggers an autoimmune response and therefore attacks body tissues, which may affect the secretion of some important hormones, such as growth hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone. These hormonal changes can cause abnormal muscle scarring and hypothyroidism. .

Fibromyalgia is similar to another condition called sarcoidosis (or myalgia syndrome), and the two are often confused. Both fibromyalgia and sarcoidosis cause body pain, while sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease caused by overuse or muscle damage, while fibromyalgia is a metabolic abnormality caused by stress. Myringitis usually occurs relatively suddenly, while fibromyalgia is a chronic condition.

American College of Rheumatology Evaluation Standards

According to the standards proposed by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), fibromyalgia is defined as pain in 4 parts of the body for more than 3 months. The guidelines combine two assessments: one is to use the Widespread Pain Index (WPI) to establish chronic systemic pain; the other is to use specific symptoms and severity to form a symptom combined severity scale (Symptom Severity Scale, SS Scale). This scale can help patients understand whether they are likely to suffer from fibromyalgia. After a simple assessment, they can discuss with the doctor based on the results of this scale.

Common causes of fibromyalgia

Possible causes of fibromyalgia include:

How chiropractors treats fibromyalgia

Chiropractors treat patients with fibromyalgia, most of which start with correcting the spine and mobilize the spine. The manipulation is done about 3 to 4 times a month to help patients relax and maintain spinal movement. As the patient’s muscle healing ability may be reduced, chiropractors will apply more gentle force to the spine. In addition, the LPG M6 treatment device can be used to relax muscle stiffness, while stretching the fascia, periosteum and tendons.
