High heels causes knee pain

This summer, I have diagnosed and treated many patients who had sprained ankles, knee joints, and low back pain due to wearing the recently popular platform shoes. Although wearing high-heeled shoes can make women’s feet look more beautiful and taller, the price to be paid behind is quite serious. Not only will they cause hallux valgus, sprained ankles, knee joint degradation, etc. Sciatica may be caused by compression of the lumbar intervertebral disc.

Wearing high heels for a long time increases knee joint wear and leads to knee degeneration.

Wearing high heels for a long time can cause calluses on the soles of the feet, swelling of the hallux, hammer toes, foot arthritis, knee pain, sprained feet, and back pain.

High-heeled shoes, whether it is high heeled or wide heeled, it will directly affect knee joints causing it to easily degenerate. The Harvard Medical School in the United States published a study in 2001 describing how high heels can affect women’s knee joints.I n this study, they selected 20 women aged between 34 and weighing nearly 130 pounds. They put on 1.75-inch wide and half-inch wide 2.7-inch tall shoes, and walked 10 meters.。

In this study, they selected 20 women aged between 34 and weighing nearly 130 pounds. They put on 1.75-inch wide and half-inch wide 2.7-inch tall shoes, and then walked 10 meters. The results of the report found that regardless of whether they were wearing broad or high heeled, the risk of sprain knee joints increased to about 26% while walking. Therefore, when we wear high-heeled shoes for a long time, the knee joint is often subjected to this force, resulting in abrasion of bone joints and soft tissues, and then degenerative knee arthritis.

In addition high-heeled shoes will also increase the pressure on the thigh muscles and knees, causing fatigue of the thigh and calf muscles, thereby accelerating the tear of the knee joint.

In addition, wearing high heels for a long time will make us feel very tired. The reason is that when we wear high heels, the physical angle of the body has changed. In order to maintain the balance of the head and body, the muscles of our body are all trying to balance this inclination, so our muscle strength is exhausted. For example, ladies wearing a pair of 4-inch high heels can tilt their body to 45 degrees.

(a) Wearing a 4-inch heel height will make the body incline to 45°

(b) Wearing a 2 inch heel height will make the body incline 22.5

Wearing high heeled shoes can cause low back pain.

Wearing high-heeled shoes is also directly related to low back pain. Because when we wear high shoes, the curvature of our lumbar spine will increase, which will tighten the lumbar muscles, increase lumbar strain and cause the lumbar joints to be misaligned and compress the nerves, which can lead to foot numbness.

(a) Normal stance

(b) High heels of different heights will cause abnormal standing posture

Wearing high-heeled shoes causes foot problems

High heel shoes can cause calluses on the soles of the feet, swelling and pain of the hallux, hallux valgus (Figure 3), hammer toes and sprained ankles.

When the heel fascia of the foot is injured or compressed, the heel fascia may tear slightly. The longer the day, the more severe the injured, which will gradually lead to inflammation and swelling. In the early stage of inflammation, the patient will feel a dull pain in the soles of the feet, and then it will become sharp pain. Patients will feel pain when their heels are on the ground when they wake up in the morning. Some patients will have heel pain after standing or sitting for a long time.
