For this article,  I will share with readers headaches caused by neck muscle tension which is known as muscle tension pain.

Pain caused by neck muscle contraction

The location of the headache occurs in the back of the head and temples. It is usually a muffled pain as if there is a very tight band pressed on the head. The patient will feel that the head is “falling" or “heavy", and even the cervical spine is stretched or painful. The pain continues from the back of the neck to the back of the head, with throbbing pain like a pulse, and sometimes a tingling sensation like neuralgia. This situation is caused by neck muscle contraction.

The time of headache is relatively irregular, and it is usually easy to appear under tension. The reason is mostly caused by the working posture. The neck muscles are overworked and headaches are caused by long-term typing or reading. These are chronic headaches caused by the tightening of the muscles behind the head and neck due to mental or physical pressure, meaning there is no disease in the brain itself.

To understand whether it is a contraction headache, it depends on whether there is severe shoulder pain. For this type of headache, as long as the shoulder, neck, and back pain is treated, it can help relieve the headache. When shoulder pain is severe, cold compress therapy can be given, or swimming, aerobic exercise, etc. can also effectively improve the condition. One of the reasons for the exacerbation of contraction headaches is insufficient exercise, as well as using a reluctant posture or working in the same posture for a long time, and the burden on the head and neck is the cause of chronic headache.

Appropriate exercise can help improve symptoms

There is an imbalance between the neck and back muscles and the connected spine, so the spine is prone to misalignment and pressure on the nerves, which makes the nerves unable to effectively control the neck and back muscles, and finally leads to the tension of the cervical spine, back and head muscles. Together, the pain will arise,  generally, taking painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs can only temporarily relieve the pain, and has no therapeutic effect. Chiropractors will use chiropractic treatment and manual correction to correct the misalignment of the spine, help the nerves to relieve and relax the tension of the neck and back muscles, so as to achieve the goal of treating the symptoms and the root cause. Of course, to cure tension headaches, patients still need to maintain daily exercise and adjust their daily postures to maintain the health of the spine and muscles. If you encounter a headache caused by neck pain, you can immediately do the following neck stretching exercises. If you feel numbness and severe pain in your hands during the stretching process, you should stop immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
